Conversation took place about starting up work to do the sound and score and rehaul of some shots
plus the new shots for the completion of Alba. Harold says he is willing to do more music for it.
"it would be nice to see this complete" Michael J Dowswell said in a chair on a cold decembers day at 14:15
MICHAEL J DOWSWELL INTERVIEW: ERRÀNS ALBA
[How did this start off?]
Well...I just start off by making a 3d scene of something I’d like to see, I seem to have a fascination with
large walls like the Great Wall of China and the big wall seen in the film King Kong. I then do something
else that I have a fondness for which in this case was a mine...and rest is just ideas that come to me once
I’ve done the main ideas...it all stems out as and when your doing it.
[Any stories to tell?]
Well…what has surprised me here on this, is that the film seems to be really quite controversial...and I
mean its just bizarre, there’s no violence or gore or swearing or anything in this, and yet I either see folk
complain a lot that it’s a tough long slow view... or... they have nothing but positive things to say...
...it really does blow me away when somebody writes out a large piece of text about the
film...that in itself just leaves me somewhat speechless, that somebody has taken the time to write out
such a massive body of text. I take it as very positive that they have sat there and typed it all out...or
even that they watched it to the end...if the film was extremely bad I don’t think they would type any
thing and or they would just kill the video and shutdown the window, not watching straight to the end?
...of course this is a internet audience I'll add who is writing about the film. At the cinema screening
I unfortunately got very little feedback because the buffet was before the five films were screened...I
tried to listen into what was said after Alba finished and all I heard was a voice on our row say “that
was quite a conceptual piece”
[When do we get part II?]
At the moment my other animation “Servus” is in full swing but I can see a time soon where I’ll put that
on pause and go back and complete Alba, there’s a lot that’s actually been done that’s just sitting there
with no soundtrack, kind of silly really but I do not regret in any way at all spending all that time on Ser
vus, I have a feeling its going to be a good one.
[You jumped project?]
Yes
[Why did you do that?]
Yes...all I can say is that when the new ideas are emerging...you need act fast on it and start on them...
that and Alba was incredibly stressful. But a lot of the ideas in Alba were squeezed out of me, there is not
not much more orange juice left in the orange on that project I think.
[What do you intend to do with the film when its complete?]
That is a hard question. I really honestly don’t know at the moment, a while back it was intended that
I would try and sell it or send it off to places like the BBC Film Network, but I just don’t think that
its good enough. This is a recurring problem, I don’t want people to pay good money for something that’s
lacking in quality.
